Chapter 3: Ken Vs. Lee

The great Wall of China...

This was it. The first battle. Ken had hoped Ryu would have had to take the first step in the tournament, but it looks like he was going to be the one. He looked at his opponent and studied him carefully. He was short, and unmistakbly Chinese. He had a stringy mustache, and a long braid in the back of his hair, which was covered on top by a blue cap with red lining. He wore baggy Kung Fu clothes, which was blue with red buttons.

Lee verses, Ken! the announcer said. Fight!

Ken quickly situated into the Shotokan fighting position, and waited for Lee to attack. Lee did not disappoint Ken. His shortness also made him very quick, and Lee attacked with another blow right after one. Ken was barely able to keep up with his speed, and took a couple serious hits. Ken flipped backward, and then prepared himself to attack Lee. He charged forward, spin-kicking into the air and swinging at Lee, who easily side steped out of the way. But Ken anticipated that, and swung his other foot back, cracking Lee a good one in the jaw. Ken then proceeded to assault Lee with a flurry of punches, but Lees quickness made it nearly impossible to break through the mans guard. But still, Ken managed three good blows.

Lee and Ken disengaged again. Kens nose was bleeding a bit, but Lee was looking a little worse. He would have a nice dent in the side of his face for a long time.

You are very powerful for being just a mere boy, Lee said to Ken, wiping a little blood from his face.

Maybe you just weak for big man! Ken said. It would have sounded macho had his Chinese been better. But his plan worked, and Lee was angered. He attacked Ken blindly, and Ken eaily exploited the little mans stupidity. He ducked under Lees jump kick and then uppercutted, hitting Lee in the groin. He then grabbed Lee and punched him a couple times in the face before throwing him aside.

I will kill you for that, boy, Lee said. You made a big mistake coming here.

Ken smiled at Lee, and the Chinese man charged madly. But this time he harnessed his anger, utilizing it, and before Ken knew he was on the ground, beaten to a pulp.

Get up boy! Lee commanded. Let me finish you off!

Ken struggled to his feet, but remained cool. He circled around Lee, looking for an opening. He got it, and jumped into the air, faking a high kick. Lee countered for it, but realized that Ken was attacking him low, and he soon found himself on the floor from a trip. Ken then proceeded to stomp on Lees head, but the quick Chinese man rolled out of the way just in time. But Ken was ready for that, and he swung his foot out, smacking Lee in the face with a round house. Lee spun around to the ground again, feeling a few teeth bust off. He rolled back to gain his bearings, but Ken wouldnt let up, hitting him with an axe kick both on the way up and down. Lee fell to the ground, unable to stand. Ken grabbed him by the shirt and then threw him through the nearest wall. Lee made no indication of consciousness.

Ken wins! the announcer cried. Ken gave the crowd a thumbs up, and then went to the locker room to shower up.

The mountains of Japan, not long ago...

I have no need for disciples, Gouken said.

But--

Especially little blond americans like you, Gouken said. I made the mistake of teaching someone Shotokan once, I wont do it again.

Well, Im not leaving, Ken said defiantly. At this remark, Gouken smiled.

You may do as you please, Gouken said. You may watch, but I will not teach you. Think of yourself as the second fool in this temple.

Huh? Ken said. But Gouken merely stood up and left, leaving Ken alone with his thoughts.

I guess Im the first fool, a mans voice said from behind Ken, who spun around and was met by a boy the looked about his age, and was Japanese. The names Ryu.

Ryu extended his hand out to Ken. Ken shook it, surprised that Ryu didnt bow, but rather followed an american tradition. He was probably trying to make Ken feel welcome.

Is he always like that? Ken asked, glancing over at the steps Gouken had exited from.

Im afraid so, Ryu said. But give him time.

Ryu awoke from the dream. He remembered Gouken so well, and soon came to think of him like a father. And now he was dead. Ryu closed his eyes for a second, then opened them. His eyes flashed wildly, and he had a determined look in his face. He would find the man that killed Master Gouken, and when he did there would be hell to pay!
